The Women of Yemen’s Special Counter-Terrorism Unit

November 2, 2010

Yemen recently formed a special counter-terrorism unit operating under the supervision of the Interior Ministry. With money and training from the United States and Britain, the force includes a special unit of 15 female combat troops recently added to foil al-Qaida’s tactic of donning women’s conservative dress in order to evade capture. Yemen is a conservative society and the searching of women by male troops is strictly forbidden. Female counter-terrorism troops train and operate alongside their male counterparts, knocking down doors and storming suspected hideouts.

Women kick butt indeed. We’re mother bears defending whatever we think we have to defend. Muslim women are just as smart, tough and resilient as any other. Bedu of any age, gender, etc have to be tough in order to survive the desert. Hey girls, go kick some terrorists around on my behalf. You go girls!

I’d also like to add that whoever took these photos is not only a good photographer, but applies an artistic touch to the composition. That makes the photos excellent.

  3. WELL, THINGS ARE REALLY GETTING SHAPED UP FOR AN ALL OUT ASSAULT ON AND IN THE WORLD, HUMAAN AGAINST HUMAN. THIS IS WHY ONE CANNOT BELIEVE ALL OF T HE REPORTS OF WARS AND RUMOURS OF WARS CEASING. WE KNOW CHILDREN ARE NOW ON MANY FRONT BATTLE LINES SO THIS SHOULD COME AS NO SURPRISE.

    Cool…

  5. Fareen Butt says:

No one is going to war just yet, Coppertino. This is an effort to prevent that. These women are usualy only wifes, mothers, sexual objects and childbearers in these countries. That is the only chance they are given to be and to achieve. Sad, but also then they have developed into the perfect candidates for maternal compassion, and for grassroots change for a better future for themselves and for thier families. I would rather have these sorts of people handling a situation like this than some more meatheaded Rambo sorts from no-where Texas who are more excited about shooting amo than the human impact on thier actions.

  6. Fareen Butt says:

Furthermore, a major part of the violent tendencies in these societies is directly related to the fact that woman have been suppressed, abused, and wiped off of the face of the daily social landscape (as it is too “inconvenient” for such men to become more sensitive to the presence of women in daily life outside of the cookiecutter roles they have traditionaly been given). Such an abusive mentality becomes a normal part of male psycology in places like this, and manifests into scarier forms over time (like suicide bombers and ripe Al-Quaida candidates) than just an unhappy female populous.

  7. jessikka says:

United we stand against terrorists. We each can do our part. I’m proud of these women and pray they and honorable men stay true to protect themselves, their children and freedom.

  8. Fareen Butt says:

    amen.
