Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap, who was considered one of the greatest military generals of the 20th century, passed away on Oct. 4th, 2013. Giap masterminded the defeat of the French at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in May 1954, and then went on to lead the Vietnamese people to independence and reunification from the Americans in 1975.

Corbis Contributor, Catherine Karnow, had an exclusive relationship with Giap, making her photos some of the best available.

Karnow explains how she came to know the late general, “My father, Stanley Karnow, the acclaimed journalist and historian of the Vietnam War, had interviewed Giap for the New York Times in March of 1990. A couple months later, I went to Vietnam, met with the General, photographed him and his family, and struck up a relationship that lasts to this day.”
